Poland - The Kaszuby Province
“Wherever you throw a stone in Kashubia, it will land in water”. So the saying goes from this wonderfully unspoiled area of north Poland, and it may not come as surprise to discover that this area is also known as the Kashubian Lakeland and the Kashub Switzerland.
Located between the Hel peninsula and Chojnice this region is packed with wonderful hills, gorges and lakes, and is the perfect place to go zigzagging through the countryside, into the historic towns and cities. There’s such a range of terrain here, with sand dunes in the north, deep forests in the south and some of the wildest beaches that Poland has to offer.
For those of you that are particularly interested in history and architecture, this region will definitely keep you occupied. Driving around the area, you’ll see a great variety of small churches, cathedrals and even castles, the most famous being the Malbork Castle (south-east of Gdansk ), the jewel of the Teutonic Knight's architecture from 1274.
Kaszuby is well known for its fish frying bistros, and Wdzydze Kiszewskie in particular, has some of the best ones on offer. As you can probably imagine, with the abundance of fresh water in this region you can try an array of fish prepared in various ways. And if you really feel like getting bak to nature, then why not try a spot of fishing yourself.
